PICSI is a sperm selection device used in the ICSI technique. It is a sterilized, plastic dish which helps in selecting healthy and motile sperms for the procedure. The selected sperms will be injected into the oocytes in the ICSI procedure. The dish has three hyaluronan hydrogel microdots at the bottom. Hyaluronan is a kind of naturally occurring biopolymer usually seen in human cells.
The PICSI dish is a polystyrene culture dish, which has three microdots of hyaluronan attached to the bottom of its interior part. This technique is advantageous for men with:
- Past history of poor fertilization with ART attempts.
- Poor sperm motility and morphology
- Past history of poor embryo development.
- Low quality sperm that is previously frozen.
