The lining of the uterus is called endometrium. A medical procedure used to destroy this lining is termed as ‘endometrial ablation’. Women who have prolonged blood loss during periods are the main candidates for this procedure. Different methods used for endometrial ablation are as follows:
- Radio frequency
- Heat
- Laser beam
- Thermal balloon
- Microwave and
- Freezing
The procedure may take only around 45 minutes and can be done at outpatient basis. A local/general/spinal anesthesia will be used. Procedure may vary according to the method chosen. The procedure will help in reducing the menstrual bleeding. In certain cases, it may cause the periods to stop altogether. There can be only very little complications like:
- Uterus perforation
- Embolism or Pulmonary edema
- Burns to the uterus
- Burns to bowel (very rare).
