Gynecological Cancers

Cancers that affect the female reproductive system are termed as ‘gynecological cancers’. They occur as a result of abnormal cell growth. There are different types of gynecological cancers. Each of them are named according to the organ/part of the body in which they occur. They may occur in the uterus, ovary, vagina, and vulva . Some of the common types of gynecological cancers are:

  • Cervical Cancer- Occur in the cervix
  • Vulval cancer- Occur in the vulva
  • Ovarian Cancer- Occur in one or both the ovaries
  • Uterine Cancer- Occur in the uterus
  • Vaginal Cancer- Occur in the vagina

The common symptoms linked with gynecological cancers are:

  • Strange and continuous vaginal bleeding
  • Unusual discharge from the vagina
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Bowel or bladder habits changes
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Burning or itching sensation
  • Soreness
  • Lumps or wart-like growths etc.

Some of these symptoms may be an indicator of any other condition. It is important to bring this to the notice of your doctor when you experience any of the symptoms. Treatment for gynecological cancers may vary according to the following factors:

  • Stage and type of the disease
  • Symptoms and severity
  • General health of the patient etc.
