It is one of common kind of sexually transmitted disease mostly seen among women. Moist tissues of the genital areas are usually affected by genital warts. In women, they are seen on the cervix, vulva, walls between the external genitals and anus, and on the walls of the vagina. It can be on scrotum, anus or the shaft of the penis, in case of men. In certain rare cases, they are seen on the mouth, tongue, throat or the lips. The common signs and symptoms of genital warts may include:
- Swelling on the genitals, which will be in grey or flesh colour
- Discomfort and itchy sensation in genitals.
- Bleeding while sexual intercourse etc.
Complicated cases of genital warts may induce cervical cancer, because, genital warts has a link with HPV infections. Problems may occur during pregnancy also. Difficulties may occur during delivery if the warts are on the vaginal wall. Diagnosis of genital warts may require pelvic examination. A magnifying device called colposcope may be used to check invisible warts.
Treatment will be suggested according to the severity and discomfort caused by the condition. Medications may not be required if the warts does not trigger any discomfort to the patient. Imiquimod and Podophyllin are two medical creams which are usually prescribed. If the condition cannot be cured by the medications prescribed, it may require surgery. It may include:
- Electrocautery
- Cryotherapy
- Surgical excision and
- Laser treatments etc.
