Ectopic Pregnancy

Normally in pregnancy, egg is released by the ovary into the fallopian tube. When the eggs meet the sperm, they become fertilized and move into the uterus where they stay for nine months. There are cases in which the fertilized eggs or embryos stay in the fallopian tube. Such cases are called ectopic or tubal pregnancy. Sometimes, the fertilized eggs can be attached to any of the organ in the abdomen or in the ovaries.

Ectopic pregnancies take place in the first few weeks. It may show certain symptoms like:

  • Pain in the lower abdomen
  • Sharp cramps in the abdomen
  • Weakness
  • Light bleeding from the vagina
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Rectum, shoulder or neck pain.

Experiencing these symptoms should be reported to the doctor immediately as it requires emergency care and concern. Ectopic pregnancy can occur due to various causes such as:

  • Damage to the fallopian tube
  • Congenital anomaly of the fallopian tube
  • Chlamydia, gonorrhoea and such sexually-transmitted diseases
  • Pelvic Inflammatory disease etc.

An ultrasound, pregnancy test and a pelvic exam can diagnose if one has an ectopic pregnancy or not. Once ectopic pregnancy is confirmed, the doctor will suggest for an emergency surgery for treating it. Sometimes, ovary and the fallopian tube may have to be removed. In certain cases, a laparoscopic surgery will be enough.Medical treatment with methotrexate can also be carried out.
