Cystectomy

A complex surgical procedure done to remove the bladder is called cystectomy. The surgery is usually suggested for the following conditions:

  • Bladder Cancer
  • Birth defects
  • Trauma
  • Neurological Disorders etc.

The bladder will be partially or completely removed in the surgery. It can also be performed as a laparoscopic procedure. The traditional surgery is done by making an incision in the lower belly of the patient. To provide a way for urinating after the procedure, the urinary tract will be reconstructed. It may be done through different ways. In certain cases, the surgeon may create a neobladder to replace the functions of the bladder.

This is a complex surgery and may cause certain complications and risks. Some of them are:

  • Incontinence
  • Loss of nerves
  • Partial shutdown of the digestive system.
