Hysterectomy

The surgical procedure by which a woman’s uterus (womb) is removed is called hysterectomy. Some cases may require removal of ovaries, cervix and the fallopian tubes. An individual may lose the ability to have periods and to conceive after hysterectomy procedure. If the ovaries are removed, the patient will then enter into a period of menopause.

Hysterectomy is a major surgery which involves certain advantages as well as risks. It may affect the hormonal balance and overall physical wellness. Hysterectomy is usually suggested for people who have:

  • Cancer on uterine, ovary, or endometrium.
  • Tumors that cannot be cured with other treatments.
  • Endometriosis that do not respond any other treatments like medication and surgery.
  • Chronic pelvic pain which cannot be treated with other methods etc.

As mentioned earlier, there are disadvantages for this procedure:

  • Surgical risks
  • Very long Convalescence
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Adverse effects of premature menopause
  • Vaginal prolapse
  • Obstruction in the bowel

Before going for the procedure, it is important to have a detailed discussion about its complications and risks.
