It is one of the most commonly used methods to tackle male infertility. If the male partner is facing problem in producing normal sperm during ejaculation, surgical sperm retrieval is used. Men having the following conditions may be a candidate for surgical sperm retrieval:
- The problem of non-obstructive azoospermia and the testicles produce low sperm count.
- Congenital absence of the vas deferens.
- Vasectomy
- Obstruction due to an infection or injury
According to the condition, the sperm may be collected directly from the testes/epididymis. If there is no sperm in the semen, it can be collected through testicular biopsy.
