Ultrasonography or ultrasound is a test which is carried out to check the woman’s uterus, ovaries and the fallopian tubes. In this procedure, a small ultrasound probe will be placed on the abdomen(transabdominal) or into the vagina(transvaginal) . This will be connected to a screen outside. The probe will capture sound waves inside the body, which will be transformed into images. As a result, a real time sonogram appears on the monitor. You will not be able to understand the picture. The result will be interpreted by the doctor.
The procedure will be done by a sonographer or a radiologist. Typically, the procedure may take 20-30 minutes of time. This test will help your doctor to get an overall idea about your ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes, thickness of the endometrium, follicle development in the ovaries etc. ultrasound or ultrasonography techniques are of different types. You may not need to have any special preparation for the test. You will be able to return to normal activities right after the test.
