Excessive bleeding at the time of regular menstrual periods is called abnormal uterine bleeding. Endometrium and myometrium are the two layers of the uterus. The endometrial lining is broken during the menstrual period and causes limited blood loss. When it becomes abnormal, the condition is termed as abnormal uterine bleeding. Most of the abnormal uterine bleeding is associated with the age of the woman.
It is important to consult the doctor when the bleeding persists for a long time. The doctor will evaluate the patient’s medical history, family history, causes for the abnormal bleeding etc. He/she might also conduct a pelvic examination. Other tests such as- lab tests, ovulatory status determinant test, endometrial assessment test etc. may also be done to determine the cause for abnormal uterine bleeding.
Treatments may vary according to the cause:
- If the condition is caused by hormonal irregularities, birth control pills may be suggested.
- Women with irregular ovulation may be suggested to have progestin (a synthetic form of progesterone)
- Excessive bleeding can be controlled by using Intra Uterine Devices.
- If the bleeding is caused by certain abnormal uterine growths such as fibroids or polyps, surgery may be required.
